Our professional, qualified childcare team is comprised of a Owner/Director, Assistant Director, classroom teachers, and a cook. In accordance with the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services Daycare Act, a minimum of two thirds of our staff are qualified in the field of Early Childhood Education. Our staff are first-aid qualified and regularly attend workshops to maintain a current knowledge base of childcare trends and practices. Each teacher is assigned to a specific group of children for whom they are responsible. The Owner/Director is responsible for all administrative duties and for assisting in the programs when required.
We encourage you to ask questions regarding your child’s progress, daily schedule, field trips, parental involvement, etc.
Julie Patterson, Owner
Hi, I am Julie Patterson, Owner/Director of Building Dreams Child Care Centre. Even as a little girl, I was passionate about learning and I remember wanting to help my younger cousins learn and experience everything. In 1995 I began my Early Childhood Education journey at Algonguin College in Ottawa where I graduated with honours in 1997. Since 1997 I have worked in many different settings; a centre for newcomers to Canada, a centre for teen Mothers returning to school and a school-age child care centre. In 2001, I returned to my “home” here in Nova Scotia and worked in a private licensed child care centre, a lab school for Halifax’s Early Childhood Education training college and the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre. My son was born in 2006 and my daughter in 2009, with the arrival of my little treasures I decided that owning my own centre was the path I needed to take. While on maternity leave with my daughter an opportunity presented itself and Building Dreams Child Care Centre became a reality.
Hi, I am Darlene Parker, the Assistant Director, here at Building Dreams Child Care Centre, where I have been employed since its birth in 2010. My start in the field of Early Childhood Education came in 2001 when the previous owner of the space now known as, Building Dreams Child Care Centre, saw a passion and dedication in me and opened the door for me to travel through. Since then, I have attained my Level 1 designation from the Department of Community Services and have been able to follow my dream of nurturing and teaching young children. “Knowing that I have made a lasting impression in a little one’s life makes my heart happy”.
Hi. I am Alexandra Jelisa Smith but everyone knows me as Jelisa. I am a preschool teacher at Building Dreams Child Care Centre. I have been working in the field in various capacities since early 2010. I began my journey as a periodic substitute teacher, then as a term substitute which then turned into a full time preschool position. I have completed the Orientation for Staff Working in Licensed Child Care Facilities through Child Care Connections.
Working with children has been my dream since I was a little girl myself. I love working with children as they fill my heart with joy.
“It is important not so much that every child should be taught but that every child should be given the wish to learn”.
Hi there, my name is Erin Angle and I work in the preschool room here at Building Dreams Child Care Centre. I have worked here since it’s opening in May 2010. Before this opportunity, many years ago, I began my career working with children in summer camps and afterschool programs. Those experiences were the catalysts that sparked my desire to teach, encourage and foster the growing minds of our youth. To begin my journey I obtained my Child and Youth degree from Mount Saint Vincent University and furthered my education by earning my Bachelor of Education from Acadia University.
The environment that the director, staff and wonderful families here have worked hard to develop and maintain is welcoming, open, nurturing and fun! We are all a great team who enjoy what we do – teach, encourage and foster healthy learning and development for everyone in our care!
I am a toddler teacher at Building Dreams Child Care Centre, working here since 2010. While in high school I took part in their co-op program and I found my niche. Children have always sparked my interest and I have enjoyed interacting with them in various capacities. In 2008 I began my journey in a child care setting that saw me grow and develop and in 2012 I earned my Level 1 designation.
“A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart”, these are words that I truly believe and are how I aspire to be in my career.
Hi, I am Jenn Goodall, an Early Childhood Educator here at Building Dreams Child Care Centre. I began my journey into professional child care at the Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education in 2011 and had my first practicum placement here at Building Dreams and I knew this was where I wanted to be. In the summer of 2012, I was employed as a summer student for the centre and now that I am finishing up my schooling, I am filling in a maternity leave position. I have been working with children for almost 7 years, first as a coach with Titans Gymnastics and now in the child care field. Children have been my passion for almost for as long as I can remember, working with children gives me excitement every day. “Children must be taught how to think not what to think.”
